In August 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the State of Louisiana Department of Education to provide assistance in identifying energy efficiency opportunities in existing K-12 public schools in New Orleans, LA.
EMO was hired as a subcontractor to The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to perform energy audits for 19 public schools in New Orleans. EMO evaluated a range of energy conservation opportunities including HVAC and lighting upgrades, changes in operating procedures, building shell improvements, water conservation measures, renewable energy opportunities, and student awareness campaigns.
EMO audited a total of 19 schools with a total area of about 1.6 million square feet. Savings identified for all schools total about 6 million kWh and 100,000 therms of natural gas, for annual cost savings of about $800,000. Measures evaluated include new high efficiency chillers, heat pump upgrades, energy recovery, cool roofs, solar hot water heating, new energy management controls systems, lighting replacements, and improvements in operating procedures.
